The European egg market may be subject to considerable changes as a result of recent trends that favour animal-friendly technologies and give preference to products resulting from such housing systems. As to laying hens, it leads to the gradual elimination of battery cage systems and the rising prevalence of deep-litter production. Since 2007 the Group has been managing its development operations in line with its commitment to animal-friendly housing systems. Currently, more than half of the entire stock (350,000–400,000 birds) is kept in deep-litter buildings, with a growing share of eggs produced in modern voliere housing systems.
