If stored properly at 5–7℃ in a refrigerator, table eggs will keep their quality for as long as 2–2.5 months despite the fact that their official shelf life, determined with a great safety margin, is only 28 days from the date the eggs are laid.

If not consumed within a few days after purchase, it is advised to put the purchased eggs (even in their original packing) immediately in the refrigerator. However, eventual film tops must always be removed in order to allow for ventilation. It is improper practice to wash eggs with any liquid prior to storage because it will remove the waxy protective layer covering the outside of the egg and reduce the shelf life.
